Environment
Krylon products do not have chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants and haven’t for more than 30 years. Our state-of-the-art Regulatory department ensures that all Krylon products comply with environmental regulations. In 1978, CFC use in aerosol propellants was banned in the United States for most products. A few product categories, such as asthma inhalers, are still permitted to use CFC propellants under the law. However, Krylon does not manufacture anything with CFC propellants.
All Krylon aerosol paints are in compliance with the California Clean Air Act for Aerosol Coatings and the California Low Emissions and Reactivity Rule (CLEAR).
Aerosol products contribute very little to smog. Smog is formed when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) react with sunlight and nitrogen oxides. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the major manmade sources of VOCs are vehicle emissions, combustion and industrial emissions. Consumer products are estimated to account for only 5% of VOCs from manmade sources, with the amount coming from aerosols extremely small. Still, we actively continue to reduce the amount of VOCs in Krylon products.
