Updating Fixtures with Metallics

ask krylon

Question: I’m tired of my shiny brass light fixtures. I want to replace them, but I want to save money.  Can I just paint over them?

Answer: Yes, you can! Spray paint is a great way to update your fixtures and saves hundreds of dollars on replacement costs.

Krylon offers a line of Brushed Metallic Finishes that would be great for this project.  Oil Rubbed Bronze is one of our most popular colour selections for a project of this type. Other than fixtures, Krylon’s Brushed Metallics can be used on wood, metal, wicker, wrought iron, glass, plaster, ceramic, fabric, and paper.

Here are some tips for applying spray paint to metal:

Before applying the spray paint to metal, remove loose rust with a wire brush, sandpaper or chemical rust remover. Remove oil with a degreaser or denatured alcohol especially on new metal. Prime surface to protect against rust and corrosion. Primers also help on smooth surfaces, like your brass fixtures, so paint will have maximum adhesion. Lightly sand glossy surface if previously painted and remove dust with a tack cloth.

Other metallic products Krylon offers are Outdoor Spaces® Metallic Finish, Fusion Metallic Shimmer®, Metallic Leafing Pens, Premium Metallic and General Purpose Metallic.
