Pet Friendly Design
Your pet deserves the very best, so why not treat your pet to a new bed made from an old chair? This project is not only inexpensive and fun to create, but you will be giving your pet a place of his or her own that will fit in with the design of your home. First, find an old high-back, wooden dining chair to refurbish. Look down in the basement, out in the garage, or ask friends and family. If you plan on getting a new dining set, this is a great way of repurposing your current set. You can also find an old chair at garage sales, estate sales, resale shops, and thrift stores. Don’t worry about the color of the wooden dining chair because it is going to be painted.
Once you find your chair, choose the cushion or pre-made pet bed you wish to use. With many pampering their pets these days, there is a wide selection of dog bedding available. Choose one that coordinates with the room that your pet will be sleeping in.
Now, that you have chosen your bedding, it is time to select the paint colors you wish to use on the bed frame. Krylon’s Indoor/Outdoor spray paint has over 70 colors to choose from and they will easily coordinate with the room where your pet will be sleeping. For some color ideas, click here. Paint your bed with one solid color or choose multiple colors - the sky is the limit!
Before painting, make sure to prep the surface of the wood. Sand the surface of the wood smooth with medium to fine grain sandpaper. Wipe clean with a tack cloth to remove dust. Then, if desired, spray wood with a primer to seal the surface.
When designing the size of your bed, remember to take into account the size of your pet. If you just brought home a new puppy, remember that puppies don’t stay small forever and will soon grow. If you take into consideration the size your pet will get, then they can enjoy the bed for many years. You can always update the bed by repainting the wood or adding a new cushion.
Once the bed is completed, it may take a few days for your pet to get used to it. Make the area surrounding the bed feel more “at home” for your pet by adding a feeding station or a basket with toys at foot of the bed. Talk about giving your pet the royal treatment!
