Customized Cornhole Boards

When it comes to sports teams, many families have divided households.  Brandon Krek’s family is no different.  He is an Ohio State University fan and his wife is a fan of rival, University of Michigan.  Each year, before the big OSU vs. Michigan game, Brandon and his friends play a few games of cornhole. In order to make everyone happy, Brandon built a customized cornhole set featuring both teams.  He knew Krylon would provide him with the exact colors to match both of the team colors perfectly.

Cornhole is a game in which players take turns tossing palm-sized fabric bags (often filled with corn, sand, or beans) at an inclined platform with a hole in the far end.  The object of the game?  You guessed it.  Try toss the cornhole bag into the hole.  For complete rules click here.

Brandon Krek has been playing cornhole for about two years.  When he wanted his own cornhole set, he decided to make his own instead of purchasing one. Brandon has made a few sets since his first.  He has thought about starting a business making cornhole sets, but for now, Brandon enjoys making them as his hobby.

How did you make your cornhole set?

I made the cornhole set, by myself, from scratch.  For the wood platforms, I used sanded pine and used Krylon spray paint to paint the boards.  I chose Krylon because the brand has a good reputation and they had the exact colors I needed.

After making the boards, I spray painted them a solid color.  Then, my wife and I made stencils out of cardboard and spray painted a block-letter O (for Ohio State) and a block-letter M (for the University of Michigan).  I used a polyurethane finish on top of the boards so that the bags could glide easily over the surface.

How long did it take to complete the project?

Three days. A lot of time was used for the polyurethane to dry.

What Krylon colors did you choose to paint it?  Why did you choose those colors?

I used Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Paint on the boards.  For the OSU colors, I used Gloss White, Banner Red and Classic Gray.  For the Michigan colors, I used Sun Yellow and Oxford Blue. These colors matched the Ohio State colors and University of Michigan colors perfectly.

What painting technique did you use?

The new EZ Touch 360° dial spray tip on the Krylon cans made it easier to apply the spray paint evenly, especially when the board is laying down.  Because I could swivel the spray tip, I was able to use a crisscross pattern when painting.  I used two coats of paint before adding the stenciling.

What do you like most about using Krylon products? Do you have a favorite Krylon product or color?

I like how Krylon spray paint doesn’t give off too much of an odor.  This was only the second time I used Krylon spray paint and it worked really well. I definitely plan to keep using Krylon for future cornhole sets and other projects.

What are some other projects you have planned using Krylon?

I am planning on making a Cleveland Browns themed cornhole set.

What advice do you have for those that want to make their own set?

If you want to make your own, the most important thing is choosing the correct wood thickness for the top of the board.  You have to be careful.  I used sanded pine on my set and it worked out well.

In terms of painting, it’s just a matter of style.  Design and paint the cornhole boards any way you want.  I used Krylon spray paint and I was very satisfied with the results.
