2 plywood lengths to fit length of cushion
3 to 4 wood slats for under cushion (should fit width of cushion)
General Supplies
Wood glue
Screws
Sandpaper
Tack cloth
Newspaper
Painter’s masking tape
Instructions
Dismantle the chair, cutting the chair back and the legs away from the seat.
Build a frame out of plywood to the size you need for the bed, adding a lip to hold the cushion in place. The front legs of the chair become the footboard and the chair back becomes the headboard.
Use wood glue and screws to assemble bed. Make sure to attach slats to the bottom of the bed frame to hold up the cushion. Depending on your dogs’ weight, 3 to 4 slats should work.
Place bed on newspaper to protect work area. Sand entire surface and wipe clean with tack cloth.
Spray entire bed with All-Purpose White Primer. Let dry.
Paint the base of the bed with Tuscan Sunset. Let dry.
Using painter’s masking tape and newspaper, mask off entire headboard, except for the posts. Spray Saddle Tan on all four bedposts. Let dry.
Spray the headboard rungs alternating between Sweet Cream and Ivory colors. Let dry thoroughly.
For extra personalization, write your pet’s name above the bed using a Short Cuts paint pen in white.
Ideas to Inspire
Look down in the basement, out in the garage or ask friends and family for a high back wooden dining chair. (If you plan on getting a new dining set, this is a great way of repurposing your current set) Also look at garage sales, estate sales, resale shops, and thrift stores.
Customize colors and cushion pattern to match your room décor.
Tips
Be sure to draw out a plan of your bed before building. By gathering the measurements before you start, you can purchase the wood pre-cut to save on building time.
