In an area separate from where you will paint and stain your project, use 220 grit sandpaper to sand the chair in the direction of the wood grain. Afterwards, remove any sanding dust using a clean rag. Ensure that the surface is clean, dull, and dry before spray painting or staining.

Begin by moving the chair onto the covered surface. To achieve the color blocked look shown, use painter’s tape to cover the top half of the chair and the bottom third of each of the chair’s legs. Leave the upper portion of the legs, the seat, and the lower half of the chair’s top uncovered.

Test the Oil Based Wood Finish on a small portion of the lower chair legs to ensure you are satisfied with the color. If satisfied, stir the Oil Based Wood Finish well before applying. Apply the Oil Based Wood Finish to the lower legs in the direction of the grain and allow to penetrate the wood for 5-15 minutes. The longer you wait, the darker/richer the color will be.

After the Oil Based Wood Finish has penetrated, wipe away the excess, working with the wood grain to blend lighter and darker areas together. When you are satisfied with the color, allow the Oil Based Wood Finish to dry completely for 24 hours before applying a protective topcoat.

Finish the lower legs with a clear protective topcoat. To achieve this look, use Minwax® Polycrylic™ Protective Finish in Matte. Apply to the lower legs with a high-quality synthetic brush in one direction with the grain. For best results use three coats, allowing each coat 2 hours to dry before using 220 grit sandpaper to ensure an even finish for the next coat.

After the final coat of Polycrylic Protective Finish has dried, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use. Once dry, remove the remaining painter’s tape from the chair.

Apply Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to the entire table using a brush or cloth for the best and most even color. Allow the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to penetrate the table for 5 to 15 minutes, then remove any excess with a clean, dry cloth.

Be prepared to apply Minwax® Oil Based Wood Finish in Golden Oak within two hours of the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner application. Test the Oil Based Wood Finish on a small, hidden portion of the table to ensure you are satisfied with the color. If satisfied, with the color, stir before applying. Then apply to the entire table in the direction of the grain and allow to penetrate the wood for 5-15 minutes. The longer you wait, the darker/richer the color will be.

Finish the staining process with a clear protective topcoat. To achieve this look, use Minwax® Polycrylic™ Protective Finish in Matte. Apply to the entire table with a high-quality synthetic brush in one direction with the grain. For best results use three coats, allowing 2 hours for each coat to dry before using 220-grit sandpaper to ensure an even finish for the next coat. After applying, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

After allowing the Minwax products to dry completely for 24 hours, prepare the surface of the table for Krylon application. To achieve the pictured look, use painter’s tape to outline two chevron patterns onto the tabletop. Cover the area surrounding the chevron patterns using painter’s tape and newspapers to protect the freshly stained wood during the Krylon product application.

Allow the Chalky Finish to dry completely before regular use.
