-
In a well-ventilated space, cover a flat surface with a drop cloth or tarp.
-
Before starting, read the Krylon® and Minwax® labels for safety and application instructions.
-
In an area separate from where you will spray, use 220 grit sandpaper to sand the surfaces of the nightstand in the direction of the wood grain.
-
Remove any sanding dust using a clean rag. Ensure that the surface is clean, dull, and dry before painting or staining.
-
Move the nightstand onto the covered surface and use painter’s tape and newspaper to protect the top of the nightstand and the door inset while you paint the rest of the nightstand.
-
Use a high-quality paint brush to apply Krylon® Chalky Finish Brush-On in Classic White to the exposed portions of the nightstand.
-
When the paint is dry to the touch, remove the painter’s tape and newspaper.
-
When the paint is fully dry, use newspaper and painter’s tape to cover the entire nightstand except the top.
-
Paint the top of the nightstand using Krylon® Chalky Finish Brush-On in Anvil Gray.
-
When the Chalky Finish Brush-On is dry to the touch, remove the painter’s tape and newspaper.
-
Use painter’s tape and newspaper to protect the entire nightstand except the door inset. The portion of the door that was just painted should be completely covered.
-
Apply Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to only the door inset using a brush or clean cloth for the best, most even color.
-
Allow the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to penetrate the wood for 5 to 15 minutes, then remove any excess with a clean, dry cloth.
-
Be prepared to apply Minwax® Oil Based Wood Finish in Classic Gray to the door inset within 2 hours of the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner application.
-
Test the Oil Based Wood Finish on a small portion of the door inset to ensure you are satisfied with the color.
-
If you are satisfied with the color, stir the Oil Based Wood Finish well before applying. Apply the Oil Based Wood Finish to the door inset in the direction of the grain and allow to penetrate the wood for 5-15 minutes. The longer you wait, the darker/richer the color will be.
-
After the Oil Based Wood Finish has penetrated, wipe away the excess, working with the wood grain to blend lighter and darker areas together. When you are satisfied with the color, allow the Oil Based Wood Finish to dry completely for 24 hours before applying a protective topcoat.
-
Finish the door inset with a clear protective topcoat. To achieve this look, use Minwax® Polycrylic™ Protective Finish in Matte. Apply to the door inset with a high-quality synthetic brush in one direction with the grain. For best results use three coats, allowing each coat 2 hours to dry before using 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the door inset, ensuring an even finish for the next coat.
-
After applying the final coat of Polycrylic Protective Finish, allow 24 hours to fully dry before moving on to the next steps.
-
Remove the remaining painter’s tape and newspaper from the nightstand.
-
Using a fine grit sandpaper, lightly sand small areas of the Chalky Finish Brush-On Classic White. To achieve the pictured look focus on the edges and corners to give the appearance of natural distress from everyday use.
-
When you are satisfied with the distressing, use a clean rag to remove and sanding dust. Ensure that the surface is clean and dry before sealing.
-
Using a high-quality paint brush, apply Krylon Chalky Finish Brush-On Clear Sealer to the areas that you sanded. Let stand for 1-2 minutes and wipe away excess with a soft, lint-free cloth.
-
Pair the ultra-matte finish of the nightstand with a glossy lamp and accent items for a one-of-a-kind look!
