-
In a well-ventilated space, cover a flat surface with a drop cloth or tarp.
-
Before starting, read the Krylon® and Minwax® labels for safety and application instructions.
-
Ensure that the wooden headboard is bare or stripped, and that the wood is clean and dry.
-
In an area separate from where you will stain and spray paint your project, sand with #220-grit sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain. Use a clean rag to remove any sanding dust.
-
Apply Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to the headboard using a brush or cloth for the best, most even color.
-
Allow the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to penetrate the drawer for 5 to 15 minutes, then remove any excess with a clean, dry cloth.
-
Be prepared to apply Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Stain in Golden Pecan within two hours of the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner application.
-
On a hidden portion of the headboard, test the Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Stain to ensure you are satisfied with the color.
-
Stir the Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Stain before and occasionally during the staining, but do not shake or thin.
-
Apply the Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Stain in the direction of the grain and allow to penetrate for 5-15 minutes. The longer you wait, the darker/richer the color will be.
-
After the Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Stain has penetrated, wipe away the excess, working with the wood grain to blend lighter and darker areas together. When you are satisfied with the color, allow the Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Stain to dry completely for 24 hours before moving on to the next step.
-
Use painter’s tape to create a triangle pattern on one side of the headboard. To achieve the pictured look, outline a triangle with the base starting on the right side, and the tip ending in the left third of the headboard. This is the area that will be painted with Krylon spray paint and brush-on paint. Cover the remaining area of the headboard with painter’s tape and newspaper to protect the Minwax Finish you applied to the wood.
-
Lightly sand the exposed portion of the headboard to prep the surface for Krylon application and wipe away any sanding dust with a clean cloth. The surface should be smooth, dull, and dry before spray painting.
-
Spray paint the exposed portion of the headboard using Krylon Fusion All-In-One® in Satin White. Allow the spray paint to fully dry before moving on to the next step.
-
When the Fusion All-In-One® is fully dry, apply Krylon Brilliant Metallic Brush-On in Pearlescent on top of the Fusion All-In-One® Satin White spray paint using a clean, high-quality brush.
-
When the Brilliant Metallic Brush-On is fully dry, remove the painter’s tape from the headboard and allow the paint to fully dry before applying a protective topcoat to the entire project.
-
Finish the entire headboard with a clear protective topcoat. Use Minwax® Polycrylic™ Protective Finish in Matte. Apply to the entire headboard with a high-quality synthetic brush in one direction with the grain. For best results use three coats, allowing each coat 2 hours to dry. To ensure an even finish, use 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the Polycrylic Protective Finish between coats.
-
After the final coat of Polycrylic Protective Finish is applied to the headboard, allow 24 hours to fully dry before regular use.
-
Style your headboard with neutral tones or bright bedding!
